This week I was chatting with a friend about books and the culture of reading. Growing up, reading was a part of our identity. It further defined your “status” as either an aje-butter reading Enid Blyton or someone else not reading at all. I noticed that those of us who read performed better at the daily spelling tests in primary school.
In Secondary school, access to novels + rich vocabulary + “exposure” derived from reading gave you some clout, and qualified you for membership in prestigious organizations like the ‘Press Club” and “Debating Society”. Reading and all its benefits also helped us build and maintain strategic alliances.
Everything from “The Passport of Mallam Ilia”, to the popular pacesetters novels at the time like “Time Changes Yesterday”, and “An Ace Up my Sleeve” by James Hadley Chase, we devoured and shared.
Why all this talk about reading instead of cooking and eating? I recently discovered Audible on Amazon and this has been my kitchen and transit companion. Sometimes it is almost impossible to squeeze in reading time into an already swamped schedule. Now the books can be listened to on my phone! An added benefit is that the trip home everyday has become much more bearable and relaxing.
I just completed: “Daughters who walk this path” by Yejide Kilanko. Currently I am listening to “The lonely polygamist” by Brady Udall. “The Lonely Polygamist” is the funniest book I have come across in a long time.
You can try Audible for 30days FREE with any 2 books of your choice.
Whip up this super easy Coleslaw while listening.

The Passport of Mallam Ilia…you brought small tears to my eyes. And Enid Blyton!!! My kids must read her books o.
I just finished Carry on Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse (he had a wonderful sense of humour), and I love ANYTHING Jeffrey Archer writes.
