Batata’s are also known as sweet potatoes. When cooked, they are firmer than the traditional american sweet potatoes. They are not as orange in color, their skin is more reddish-purple than brown, and they are typically sold in asian stores.
Batatas remind me a lot of african yams. I fry them, boil them, and roast in the oven just like african yams.
This recipe is the classic Oya Come Chop recipe. Super nutritious, very tasty and easy to make. In less than 30minutes, dinner is ready!
Batata + Veggie Porridge

Ingredients
- 3 medium sized batatas (peeled and chopped into bite sized cubes)
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 1 bunch of watercress (steamed and drained)
- 1 bunch of turnip greens (steamed and drained)
- 1 medium sized smoked whitefish (deboned and shredded)
- 3 gloves of garlic (smashed)
- 3 medium sized tomatoes on the vine (chopped)
- 3 tbsp canola oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp curry
- 2 tsp thyme
- 1 cup of water
Instructions
- Heat up a non-stick pot on the stove.
- Pour in the oil, add the tomatoes, onions and garlic.
- Stir and cook for about 10minutes while stirring continuously.
- Add the water and chopped batata.
- Add all the spices and leave to cook for about 15 mins or until the batata is soft.
- Add more water to cook the batata if necessary.
- Add the veggies and smoked fish.
- Stir and cook for additional 2 mins.
- Turn of heat and enjoy!
